Composite decking in Bradford

Bradford is built on hills, and so are most of its gardens. Composite decking is often the simplest way to turn a sloping back garden or a stone-flagged yard into somewhere to sit. Fitted capped composite typically costs £120 to £220 per m², or about £1,700 to £3,100 for a 14 m² deck.

Decks for Bradford gardens

Much of inner Bradford is stone terraces with small, steep back gardens, often stepped down the hill in two or three levels with retaining walls between them. A deck on each level, linked by composite steps, is a neater answer than trying to level the whole plot.

Further out, in Baildon, Bingley and Thornton, semis and detached houses have bigger gardens that still fall away from the house. A deck built level with the back door can end up well over a metre above the lawn at the far edge. At that height it needs posts on concrete footings or ground screws, a balustrade and a planning application.

Weather on the hills

Bradford sits higher than Leeds and gets more wind and rain, and places like Queensbury and Thornton are among the highest towns in England. That favours capped composite or PVC over timber: both shrug off the wet. It also means fixings, posts and balustrades need to be properly specified for wind.

In exposed gardens choose a textured board for grip, and avoid very dark colours, which show water marks after every shower.

Bradford prices

Bradford prices are close to those in Leeds. The things that push a Bradford deck up the range are the slope, the steps and access: in a stone terrace with no back gate, everything goes through the house. Try the cost calculator with "raised" ticked if your garden falls away.

Composite decking in Bradford: questions

01

How much does composite decking cost in Bradford?

Typically £120 to £220 per m² fitted for capped composite. Raised decks on sloping gardens cost 20% to 60% more.

02

Do I need planning permission for decking in Bradford?

Not if it is no more than 30 cm high, not in front of the house and, with other buildings, covers no more than half the garden. Bradford Council offers paid pre-application advice for householders if you are unsure.

03

Can you deck a steep Bradford garden?

Yes. Split-level decks with steps between them suit steep plots best, and keep each level lower, which can help with planning.

04

Is there a conservation area issue in Saltaire?

Saltaire is a World Heritage Site and a conservation area, with Article 4 directions on many houses. Check with Bradford Council before any work that can be seen from the street.
