Composite decking in York

York gardens are mostly flat, which keeps decking simpler than in the West Yorkshire hills. The local questions are different: river flooding, conservation areas and Victorian terraces with narrow yards. Capped composite typically costs £120 to £220 per m² fitted.

Decking where it floods

Parts of York close to the Ouse and Foss flood regularly, including streets in Clementhorpe, Fishergate, Huntington Road and Leeman Road. Check your address on the government's long-term flood risk service before you design a deck.

In flood-prone gardens, composite and PVC have a clear edge over timber: they do not swell or rot after a soaking. Use an aluminium or Use Class 4 treated frame, fix it so it cannot float, and leave the area under the deck open so flood water and silt can drain and be washed out.

Conservation areas and listed buildings

York has many conservation areas, covering the historic centre and many of the old villages, and a very large number of listed buildings. A low deck at the back of a house in a conservation area is usually still permitted development, but anything at a listed building needs listed building consent, and some streets have Article 4 directions that remove permitted development rights.

City of York Council publishes a guide to living in a conservation area. If in doubt, ask before ordering anything.

Terraces and new estates

The Victorian terraces of South Bank, Leeman Road and the Groves have narrow yards, often flagged, with access only through the house. A low aluminium frame over the existing flags avoids breaking them out, and shorter boards make carrying easier.

Newer estates on the edge of the city, such as Germany Beck and around Huntington, have flat gardens on heavy clay that holds water. A good gravel base and membrane under the deck keep the frame out of standing water.

Composite decking in York: questions

01

How much does composite decking cost in York?

Capped composite typically costs £120 to £220 per m² fitted, or about £1,800 to £3,300 for a 15 m² deck.

02

Is composite decking OK in a garden that floods?

It copes better than timber. Use a frame that will not rot or float away, and keep the space under the deck open so it can be cleaned out after a flood.

03

Do I need permission for decking in a York conservation area?

A low deck at the back is usually still allowed. Listed buildings need listed building consent, and some streets have Article 4 directions. Check with City of York Council.
